What is your system for securing valuables while on the road?
What about stashing your key while surfing? I've been guilty of the old "chuck it on the tire and hope for the best" strategy for years. Now that everything I own will be in my van, I need to do better. Much better. As much as I hate having this on the internet, security is a topic that needs to be touched upon...
There are some fantastic options out there if you have a trailer hitch like HitchSafe Key Vault. Alas, I don't have a trailer hitch. After a lot of searching, I decided to pick up this 321 Industries Key Safe on Amazon. It was a heck of a struggle trying to find one that would fit a car key - there are shockingly few that work for this out there. I glued the magnet to the back so I can padlock it to the tow bar and stick it up under the vehicle out of sight. (NOTE: There are also some bigger options out there for larger keys which could be bolted directly to your vehicle like MasterLock 5401D.)
I was robbed last year in Costa Rica after my locked car was broken into. I knew better than to leave stuff in the car but I just ran down for a quick surf check. They took everything - from my passport to money to all my underwear. So if someone breaks into my key box somehow, I wanted to have a contingency.
Inside the van I'll have an electronic keypad safe bolted in from 3 angles and stored in an additional metal casing to hold any valuables. The safe will be set back inside the casing so it can't be accessed by crowbar. The casing itself will be welded to the metal bed frame so it can't be slammed on.
What about someone driving away with the whole van? My van key comes in two pieces - the half I keep in the outside box only opens the door, it cannot start the van without the chip-key, which I will have locked up and in a separate lock-box and hidden elsewhere inside the van. You can never be too paranoid, right?
Now that you all know my security secrets, please don't try to rob me... There are better ways to acquire an entry-level DSLR and an iPhone!
